Concept
A concrete plane shadowing a long terrace open to the tropical canopy.
The palette of Board-Formed Concrete, Tropical Hardwood, Low-Iron Glass, Polished Concrete pairs cool board-formed concrete with rich tropical hardwood. The building reads as elemental — earth, shadow, glass — with little ornament beyond its proportions.
A long roof. A long shadow. Everything else withdraws.
Set in the highlands of Oaxaca, Caldera Pavilion was completed in 2023 as a year-round residence. The 310 m² pavilion spans 2 above ground on a 2,600 m² site, sheltered beneath a deep concrete overhang that tames the high-altitude sun.
